Balboa's History

In the Fall of 1928, San Francisco gave birth to a new high school. Located on the southern frontier of the City, the school was named after Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the famous Spanish explorer who was the first European to discover the Pacific Ocean, hence our slogan: "First on the Pacific."

Balboa originally consisted of a single building, a faculty of 26, and a complement of 667 students. The grounds and landscape presented a much different picture than one sees today. Where the athletic field, gym and bleachers now stand, there was a vegetable garden. The main building looked out over a barren sand lot toward a cow trail which is now known as Alemany Boulevard.

More than three-quarters of a century have passed and thousands of students have traveled through these halls and portals, sunned themselves on the grassy campus slopes, and gathered in the shade of the giant sheltering palms. Over the years, our students have gone on to higher education at the finest college and universities throughout California and the nation. Balboa's teams have excelled in all sports and have had many championship seasons. Our alumni association boasts over 8,000 members and is a pillar of support for our school, providing scholarships for students and grants for teachers.

On January 20, 1995, then Mayor Frank Jordan designated Balboa High School a San Francisco Historical Landmark (No. 205), the only SFUSD school to receive such an honor. The Parent Teacher Student Association is proud of our school and proud of our students. We look forward to having you join us!
