2009 California State Convention SAN JOSE
STATE CONVENTION
The annual California State PTA Convention is held for the transaction of certain organization business and for the instruction, information, and inspiration of the PTA members.
PTA leaders at the unit, council, and district PTA levels change constantly, and each level of service in PTA requires different and unique qualities in an individual. Recognizing that development of skills will help each leader realize his or her greatest potential; the California State PTA seeks to ensure that the annual convention, through general meetings and conferences, provides the opportunity to focus on leadership training.
The annual convention affords the membership in California, acting through its accredited delegates, an opportunity to participate in:
- Electing officers;
- Approving bylaw amendments;
- Voting on the Legislation Platform and Legislation Policies; and
- Adopting resolutions.
PURPOSE
According to the California State PTA Bylaws, each association in good standing is represented at the California State PTA Convention by the president-elect or president and all other elected delegates to whom the association is entitled, as well as elected delegates representing the district and council PTAs.
The convention purposes are to
- Conduct the annual business of the California State PTA;
- Train, inform, and inspire PTA leadership; and
- Provide delegates the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with other delegates from throughout the state.
The California State PTA strongly encourages its units, councils, and district PTAs to budget for and send as many delegates as entitled to each annual convention. Convention is an authorized expense to cover registration, housing, meal allowance, and transportation for each delegate. Convention expenses should be a line item in the unit, council and district PTA annual budgets. (The Budget 5.2, 205; Fig. 5-3, 206) Planning for convention and providing an opportunity for delegates to attend is a membership priority

Second District of the California State PTA also known as the San Francisco PTA
We serve students and their families of the San Francisco Unified School District in the county San Francisco.
Second District is PTA at the county level. Chartered in 1907, we encompass all of San Francisco County, California. We currently serve over 58 out of council units (school site) PTAs. Together we are over 8700 members strong. We have the pleasure and the responsibility of chartering new units throughout the county. We act as a conduit for information flowing from the unit to the state level and vice-versa. We work in partnership with the San Francisco County Office of Education, and provide parental input on a variety of issues.
The officers and chairman of Second District PTA work closely with our out of council units to ensure that they have the training, mentoring, information, and guidance they need to be successful leaders and advocates. In turn, the units provide these same services to their units members.
This web site is only one of the tools we provide for the edification of our members. We also publish a bi-monthly newsletter, The SFPTA Newsletter that is sent to all unit presidents, school principals, and school district superintendents at no cost, or can be purchased by subscription for anyone else. In addition, we coordinate attendance at the annual California State PTA convention each spring, and we host our own day of workshops three times a year in April, September and January.
