What is the process for working with the District PTA?

Interested in working with your school or state PTA on a project or event? Do you want PTA promotion, financial, or volunteer support for your project or event?

The Second District of the California State PTA (the San Francisco citywide PTA) loves to work with other organizations on our shared goals of supporting children and families. Take a look at our Mission and Goals to see if we may be able to work together!

Your goals should also align with California and National PTA policies, positions, resolutions, and advocacy priorities. PTA is

If you think that your organization, program, or event may be a good partner for PTA, here is what you will do:

  1. Let us know! Send a message to our SFPTA President, the Communications Team, or another District Board member to introduce yourself and/or fill out an interest form.
  1. We may ask you for more information or a quick chat to answer questions.

What do you need from us?

Most requests for promotional support can be decided pretty quickly by our Communications Team, but if you need significant financial or volunteer support, it may take a little longer for us to respond.

If you need financial or volunteer support (see below for examples,) our Board will review it at our monthly meeting. For an ongoing or branded partnership, the Board will review and make a recommendation to our members before they vote at a quarterly meeting. PTA is a membership organization and our members make most major decisions as a group.

Note: promotional support for an event does not guarantee ongoing support for an organization.

What is considered “significant” support?

  • Any financial support, including
    • Using our Zoom account or other PTA resources
    • Printing
    • Interpretation
    • Refreshments
    • Childcare expenses
  • Volunteer support that exceeds our usual responsibilities, such as
    • Staffing an event
    • Leading or hosting an event
    • Speaking at an event
    • Providing interpretation
    • Distributing posters, flyers, or promotional materials
  • Promotional support that exceeds our usual internal responsibilities. The Communications team determines what is “significant” for their resources.
    • Sharing info on social media is not significant. Drafting a unique post is significant.
    • Sharing editorial content on our website is not guaranteed
    • Posting a logo as an official partner on a website to be approved by membership

There are different timelines, depending on whether you have worked with us before and what you need:

  1. If you have an existing or previous relationship with the California State PTA, the Second District or your school PTA [list of current allies and collaborators] and do not need significant support, financial resources, or volunteer support, we try to respond within 48 hours.
    Examples:
    1. Parents for Public Schools is hosting an enrollment workshop and want us to share details on Social Media
    2. San Francisco Unified is hosting a Town Hall on returning to school with their own staff providing information.

  2. If you do have an existing or previous relationship with the California State PTA, the Second District or your school PTA and you need significant promotional, volunteer, or financial resources from the Second District, the Board will need to consider your request at a monthly Board meeting and you will have a response within 30 days.
    Examples:
    1. Parents for Public Schools has asked us to pay for refreshments and childcare for their event
    2. San Francisco Unified invites us to organize parent focus groups to share thoughts about returning to school safely.

  3. If you do not have an existing or previous relationship with the District PTA and you need significant promotional, volunteer, or financial resources from the Second District, the Board will need to consider your request at a monthly Board meeting, and you will have a response within 30 days.
    Example:
    1. The Women’s March invites the PTA to participate as a Unit in the Women’s March, including recruiting participants, promoting through social media, etc.

  4. For ongoing and significant support, the Board will make a recommendation for the full, citywide membership to vote to approve the partnership. Our full membership only meets three or four times a year: September, January, April (and sometimes May.)
    Examples:
    1. Walk SF would like to use the PTA logo on its list of sponsors, include us in their ongoing monthly organizing calls, and share information about their events and activities to our Units.
    2. A citywide afterschool enrichment program is funded by your PTA at your site. The program wants to use the PTA logo on their marketing materials (website and promotional materials) they are sending to other schools.

Remember: even if we don’t have an ongoing partnership with your organization or agency, PTA can still promote and support one-time events and programs that may meet our Mission and Goals, such as Town Halls, Candidate Forums, parent education workshops and training, etc.
