The Second District PTA asked the School Board and Superintendent to quickly address the literacy and chronic absence crisis in SFUSD.

Second District PTA is deeply concerned with the low reading proficiency of SFUSD students. We urge the school board to adopt universal screening for risk of dyslexia as well as a curriculum and professional development based on evidence-based science of reading with Structured Literacy Instruction.

Chronic Absences
Second District PTA has identified the issue of chronic absences, especially in grades K-3, as our high priority advocacy issue. Students who don’t show up don’t do well in school.

Reinstate Advisory Coalition
With the goal in mind to help educate our community about ways to be involved, and to
support collaboration and communication between all advisories, councils, committees,
and affinity groups, we urge SFUSD to reinstate this coalition.
